Understanding how a wind turbine works involves pupils in using some challenging concepts, such as energy and power, the conservation of energy and the efficiency of energy transfers. SEP has developed a model wind turbine to support practical activities and to help to explain the science behind wind power. In addition, there is a ‘mini-turbine’ that can be used for introductory work on wind power. The emphasis of the materials in this booklet is on KS4, but some of the activities can be adapted for use at KS3. To complement the practical activities, there are also some computer-based activities (data analysis, modelling and website research) that can be run alongside the practical work.
